People Power Wins in Tamil Nadu
Sudha Vidyasagar
In an earlier article I had opined that rather than worshiping great personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, we should follow his principles and try to lead an honest life.
The recent assembly elections and its results in Tamil Nadu has proved that people in the state stuck to their principles. They did not give in to the various forms of temptation shown by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party like laptops and grinders in the election manifesto. People there decided that rather than having laptops and grinders in their homes, they would like to have a corruption-free party in their state.
The overwhelming majority with which the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam came to power in Tamil Nadu was not AIADMK's victory, but DMK's loss. People voted against corruption and not for AIADMK, as before the 2G spectrum scam came to fore, AIADMK was almost written off in the political circles. The same colour TV given by the DMK to tempt the people showed the party's reality to them. Every single person, may it be the rich or poor, literate or illiterate came to know about the 2G spectrum scam through the news channels. They were also able to see Karunanidhi family's monopoly in the cine field, as most of the good films in Tamil Nadu were bought by production houses belonging to members of Karunanidhi family thereby snatching the chance of other producers.
People were seeing all this but kept quiet, waited for their chance, and took the right step at the right time. Neither money nor any object could cloud their judgement. They wanted a change and they brought it with their own hands. Kudos to the people of Tamil Nadu, who exercised their right to franchise in full force rather than just sitting at home, commenting about the situation and then going off on a holiday on the day of election.
