This scooter is not merely for riding!

Four final-year mechanical engineering students of the Pune Zilla Shikshan Mandal's College of Engineering at Manjri in Pune have designed an agro-scooter which is a multi-purpose vehicle that can perform 12 different farming operations.

Among other things, the agro-scooter can be used to lift water from a well and irrigate land, spray pesticides, cut fodder and even generate electricity.

This agro-scooter has been designed by Vishal Sable, Tushar Dhere, Nemuddin Sayyed and Pooja Yadav. The quartet developed the vehicle as part of their final year project.

Before launching on the project, the students met several farmers in order to get to know their requirements. They got hold of an old scooter and set to work on it. All that they now required was a reciprocating pump, a 500-watt inverter, bike tyres, drums and a car battery. Their agro-scooter was ready at a cost of Rs 35,000!

A centrigugal pump installed on the scooter helps in lifting water from a well to irrigate the land - something which can be very useful to a farmer who is hampered by hours of load-shedding. The vehicle also has an inverter which supplies power to small electronic gadgets. A separate pump and blower fitted to the scooter enables the vehicle to spray pesticides. In addition, equipments fitted to the scooter can enable it to perform functions of a vacuum cleaner, fodder cutter, battery charger and a flour mill.

The students say that they have designed the vehicle in such a manner that it is just 25 per cent of the cost of other cultivators but does a lot more.

The students claim that many farmers have approached them and expressed a willingness to buy such a vehicle. They plan to make customised agro-scooters depending upon individual requirements - this will reduce the cost and besides, not every farmer would require the vehicle to perform all the twelve functions.
